Early History of the Mobile Baybears
The Mobile Baybears go all the way back to 1908, when they joined the Southern Association as the Sea Gulls. The name change came just 10 years later, and the Bears stuck for good at this point! The club played in the Southern Association until 1931, when they made a move to Knoxville, Tennessee. They returned to Mobile in 1944, however, playing in 5,000-seat Hartwell Field in midtown. They continued in the Southern Association through its final season before being integrated into the Double-A league. During the 1940s and 1950s, the Mobile Baybears were longtime affiliates with the Brooklyn Dodgers and then Cleveland Indians.
Late History of the Mobile Baybears
After the construction of the Hank Aaron Stadium, the Mobile Baybears first donned their Southern League jerseys in 1998. Originally affiliated with the San Diego Padres, the Mobile Baybears reached the playoffs in each of their first two seasons. They won the Southern League Championship in 1998 and 2004 before signing a new development agreement with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2007. Under this leadership, they won back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012. This year is actually the very first year that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will be the Mobile Baybears affiliate!
Mobile Baybears Player Stats
The Mobile Baybears have seen over 150 of their players promoted to the Major Leagues, and many are still there today. Some of those important names include Jake Peavy, Paul Goldschmidt, Carlos Gonzalez, Justin Upton, AJ Pollock, and Patrick Corbin. There are many others who have made their way into the Majors from their origins as Mobile Baybears!
