For the history & nature buffs among you, the area has much to offer.
You'll find The National Museum of Naval Aviation and home of the Blue Angels just east at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. We also have both the Battleship USS Alabama and the submarine USS Drum to our west at Mobile's Battleship Park. We have two historic forts, Fort Morgan (just west of town at the end of the peninsula into Mobile Bay) and Fort Gaines just across from Fort Morgan on Dauphin Island. Fort Morgan is where Admiral Faurragot said "Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead". Fort Morgan is also where you'll find the ferry to Dauphin Island from which you can drive to Mobile if you are looking to go by sea rather than land.
The area has a bounty of wildlife included endangered sea turtles and endangered beach mice. We have State Parks both between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach (Gulf State Park) as well as at Fort Morgan. You can also explore the Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge just a few miles west or visit The Estuarium at Dauphin Island Sealab or the Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary.
